Gangneung Girls’ High School (Principal Kim Chang-il) battled back from injury to win the 56th President’s Cup National Middle and High School Volleyball Tournament.
Led by head coach Seo Dong-sun, Gangneung Girls’ High School defeated Jeonju Geunyoung Girls’ High School 3-2 in a full-set thriller in the girls’ final of the tournament at the Glory Sports Center in Jeonnam on Tuesday.
Gangneung Girls’ national championship is five years after the 29th CBS Bae National Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball Tournament in 2018, when the team competed with only eight players. Gangneung Girls’ School also had only 10 players this year.
Five of their main players were not in top form for the tournament due to minor injuries, but they made an ‘injury fight’ to compete while receiving treatment. In the preliminary round, they defeated both Daejeon Yongsan High School and Daegu Women’s High School 3-0, and in the quarterfinals against Cheonan Cheongsu High School, they won 3-0.
The high point came in the quarterfinals. After battling to a 2-2 tie against powerhouse Sehwa Women’s High School, the team battled back from a 15-point deficit in the fifth set to win 25-23 in deuce and advance to the final.
Gangneung Girls’ High School also swept the individual awards. Nam Nam-seo (2 years) was named the Most Valuable Player, Yong Da-jung (2 years) won the Setter Award and Oh Eun-chae (1 year) won the Offense Award. Head coach Seo Dong-sun was honored with the Leadership Award. 파워볼
