Despite narrowly escaping a third straight defeat, Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of winning the league this season remain slim.
Soccer statistics outlet Score 90 used statistics from bookmaker BET365 to reveal the current Premier League (PL) title favorites and their odds of winning. Tottenham, along with Newcastle, have just a 2% chance of winning the title.
Tottenham’s form has been subdued of late. They were on a massive upswing in the league at the start of the season, going unbeaten in 10 games, but they hit a snag against Chelsea last week. After Christian Romero’s red card, James Maddison and Mickey van der Vaart were injured during the game. To add insult to injury, Destiny Udogie was sent off after accumulating cautions, leaving us down to nine men. We couldn’t overcome the numerical disadvantage and lost 1-4 to Chelsea.
The next game was a shocker against Wolverhampton. Tottenham took the lead early in the first half through Brennan Johnson, but were unable to hold off a fierce Wolverhampton attack. In the end, Spurs conceded back-to-back goals from Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina just before the end of the second half to lose 1-2.
The downward spiral continued against Aston Villa. With a rash of injuries and key players missing through suspension, Tottenham battled Villa from the start. However, Tottenham conceded two goals to Villa in the next two minutes. The game ended with a 1-2 score and a third straight defeat.
Fortunately, they broke the losing streak in their last game against Manchester City. Spurs were greeted with a chaotic start as Son Heung-min scored a goal and an own goal in the early hours. City responded with a goal from Phil Foden, but Tottenham held on for a late goal from Giovanni Lo Celso. Jack Grealish pulled one back in the second half, but Dejan Kuluczewski’s header in stoppage time secured a 3-3 draw.
According to the publication’s leaderboard, City are the favorites to win the title. The defending champions have gone three games without a win since their last match against Chelsea in Round 12. Despite being winless in the league recently, they are the favorites with a 53% chance of winning the title. The next favorites are Arsenal at 23% and Liverpool at 18%.
