“I felt like our deficit was exposed, and Seoul’s response was good”
Gimcheon head coach Jung Jung-yong says his team’s deficit has been exposed.
Gimcheon suffered a 1-5 defeat against FC Seoul in the fifth round of the Hana Bank K League 1 2024 on Wednesday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Gimcheon, who led the standings with 9 points after going 3-1-1 in the previous round, failed to catch up to Pohang Steelers with the loss against Seoul and remained in second place.
Gimcheon lined up in a 3-4-3. Kang Hyun-moo put on the goalkeeper’s gloves, while Kim Jae-woo, Kim Bong-soo, and Park Seung-wook formed the back line. Kim Tae-hyun, Yoon Jong-kyu, Kim Dong-hyun, and Kim Jin-gyu combined in the midfield, while Lee Jong-min, Kim Min-joon, and Kim Hyun-wook formed the front three to attack Seoul’s goal.
Gimcheon, which won the K-League 2 title last season, has been a surprise promotion contender under Jeong Jung-yong, playing strong attacking football. After winning their opening match 1-0 against Daegu FC, Gimcheon showed promise in the second round, falling 2-3 against defending champions Ulsan HD.
They then won back-to-back games against Jeonbuk Hyundai in the third round and Suwon FC in the fourth round to take a surprise lead. The Pohang Steelers drew 1-1 with Suwon on the second day of the tournament to drop to 10 points, but they had a chance to regain the top spot depending on the result in Seoul. However, a lethargic performance against Seoul put the brakes on their momentum.
Cho Young-wook scored the first goal. After picking up the ball on the halfway line, Cho spread out down the left flank and sent a cross from the edge of the box to Ilyuchenko. Ilyuchenko spotted Young-Wook Cho, who was a beat late in penetrating the defense, and picked him out, and Young-Wook found the back of the net with a right-footed shot into the corner of the net. It was the second consecutive goal against Gimcheon and the third consecutive offensive point.
Seoul scored another goal. The forward pressure paid off. In the 33rd minute, Palosevic stole the ball away from Gimcheon on the right flank, where Kim Sang-hyeop collected it and sent a low cross into the box. Ilyuchenko, who was rushing forward, slid the ball into the empty net to make it 2-0.
In the 38th minute, Choi Chul-won’s long kick went straight through the Gimcheon defense to Ki Sung-yong. Ki sent a low cross to the center of the box, where Ilyuchenko was quick to get to it and put his foot on it to complete his multi-goal performance.
Seoul added one more goal. Ilyuchenko completed his hat trick, this time through forward pressure. After Gimcheon won the ball, they continued to attack, and Ilyuchenko was sent down the left flank. After 카지노 beating one defender, Kim Sang-hyeop cut low into the box, where Ilyuchenko rattled the Gimcheon net with a low shot that only took a slight change of direction. The goal was later overturned as it was confirmed that the ball did not hit Ilyuchenko’s foot.
Gimcheon pulled one back early in the second half with a fantastic mid-range goal from Kim Min-joon, but it was not enough to overturn the score. Instead, they conceded another goal to Park Dong-jin in the last minute of the second half and fell 1-5.
After the match, Jung Jung-yong said, “I want to praise the players for playing well and preparing well, even though we conceded, and I want to thank the fans for coming out. We’ll have to monitor them well. My feeling before the game was that our deficiencies were exposed. We’ll have to be quick and tactical,” he said.
Compared to the last match, “Tactically, they didn’t play the way we thought they would. I think we reacted well. We tried to make changes, but the timing was not right. We’ll take today as a lesson and prepare well with the players so that we can deal with it.”
