World Athletics has released the names of 11 candidates for the 2023 Female Athlete of the Year award.All 11 have achieved significant results this year and are expected to compete for votes.The list of nominees, selected by a panel of experts, was posted on WAAF’s website and official social media accounts today (Nov. 11).The Budapest 2023 World Championships champion dominates the Women’s Athlete of the Year nominations.Femke Bole (NED), who won the 400m hurdles at the World Championships and broke the indoor women’s 400m world record by 41 years earlier this year (49.26), and Shirley Richardson (USA), who overcame a “marijuana controversy” to finish first in the 100m and third in the 200m at this year’s World Championships, Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela), who won four consecutive women’s triple jump titles, Shericka Jackson (Jamaica), who finished first in the 200 meters and second in the 100 meters, and Yaroslava Mahuchik (Ukraine), who won the women’s high jump. The standout athlete in the field is Faith Kipyegon (Kenya).
Kipyegon set world records in the women’s 1,500 meters (3:49.11) and 5,000 meters (14:05.20) in the first half of the year and was crowned champion in both events at the World Championships in Budapest.Maria Pérez (Spain), who won the women’s 20- and 35-kilometer races, Winfred Yabi (Bahrain), who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Gudaf Tsugei (Ethiopia), who won the 10,000 meters at the World Championships and set a new world record (14:00.21) in the 5,000 meters at the Diamond League Finals, were also recognized by the experts as Athlete of the Year.Haruka Kitaguchi (JPN) was honored as an Athlete of the Year nominee after winning the women’s javelin at the World Championships and Diamond League Final.
Only one Asian athlete has ever been named World Athletics’ Athlete of the Year, Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar) in 2017 for the men.
