Pedi said after the game, “The most important thing for a pitcher is to get out of long innings. I didn’t do that in the last game, but I did a good job today,” and credited catcher Wilson Contreras for helping him “get his mitt a little bit higher and throw a sweeper that was away from the plate, so I was able to induce more swings and misses.”
The Cardinals, who have won two straight since losing two straight, are 59-56 (.513 winning percentage), good for second place in the NL Central and the fifth wild-card spot. The Cardinals keep their postseason hopes alive by trailing the third-place Atlanta Braves (60-53, .531) by two games. St. Louis also got a boost when Pedroia, who was acquired in a postseason trade, picked up his first win of the season.
